Environmental Management
Environmental safety is one of the priority domains in the Company’s activity.
Environmental protection practical activities are aimed at materializing the ecological policy adopted in 2003.
Since 2004, the Environmental Management System has been certified to comply with ISO 14001:2004 and applied to the Company’s all subdivisions.
The Company has all compulsory nature conservation installations. Waste water, including storm water, is neutralized at in-house treatment facilities; most of abgases are emitted to atmosphere after treatment or neutralization; unusable hazardous solid wastes are deposited at the in-house disposal site.
A full-scale return water system enables to reduce 5 times the requirements in fresh water used as a coolant. Over 90% of the resultant waste is utilized.
The environment is monitored by the Company laboratories accredited with the right to follow up the emissions and the environmental conditions.
Over the last years, there was never observed any noticeable negative impact on the environment due to the Company activities. The air quality in the Company’s territory and the buffer area is within normal limits. In assessing the environmental protection activities, all kinds of environmental impact are taken into consideration: exploitation of feedstock and utilities, discharge into the environment and its condition.
The Company is in an everlasting quest for engineering solutions to improve the nature conservation installations and to scale down the negative environmental impact. The problems faced are tackled by the in-house Research & Technology and Design Centres, as well as by the invited specialized research and design organizations.
A special 2004-2008 Environmental Management Program has been devised and is in action to materialize a pronounced environmental policy.
To ensure ecological safety and sustainable development, the Company devised a new 2007-2015 ecological program last year, taking into account the projections until 2012. A program contemplates the Company's practical activities on implementing the pronounced environmental policy following a basic principle of sustainable development. This ecological program is part and parcel of the Company's general socio-economic development program. The Program's specific objectives: to enhance ecological efficiency and emergency resistance of the production units, to develop environmental constructions, to create an efficient monitoring system and to advance the environmental management system, to solve individual ecological problems of the Nizhnekamsk Municipal Formation.
These objectives shall be reached by materializing concrete technical and organizational undertakings.
The Program's implementations will enable to considerably save natural resources, reduce emissions and discharge into the environment.
The Program contemplates to save:
6,044K Gcal of heat;
414m kWh of power;
21kt of standard fuel;
61kt of hydrocarbon feed;
to preclude discharge into the environment:
6.4kt of repugnant substances into the air;
3.9m m3 of waste water;
1kt of unusable waste.
The Program stresses the need for preserving natural environment and contemplates compensatory afforestation of a 100 hectare area, accomplishment and planting of trees and gardens in the territory of the Company and the Town, sanitary attendance to the suburban forestry, upgrade of the Nizhnekamsk domestic water-supply system.
The estimated cost to materialize the Program shall total around RUR 5.3bn, including ecological effectivization of the production units to total about RUR 2.8bn, performance of the existing and construction of new nature conservation installations – about RUR 1.81bn, monitoring upgrade, proactive and organizational measures – about RUR 650m.
In a situation of the ever-increasing production volumes, the Company's environmental policy primary target shall be scaling up the ecological efficiency which is assessed by the specific environmental expenses per RUR 1m of the product output.
The environmental expenses deal with feedstock, utilities, water consumption, air emissions, waste water and harmful substances discharged into water basins, amount of unusable waste, exploitation of land resources.
The 2003-2007 ecological efficiency assessment is favored as positive due to the noticeable improvement of such indicators like air emissions, utilities consumption, waste water discharge into the water basins, land use, buildup of unusable waste. Dynamics of individual ecological expenses are shown on the graphs.
The positive results of the nature conservation activity of OAO “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” have been recognized by the government bodies of the Russian Federation and the Tatarstan Republic.
In 2007, the Company won a title “Leader of Environmental Activity in Russia” at the All-Russian contest. The 2004-2008 Environmental Management Program, the 2007-2015 Ecological Program and the Program for Development and Implementation of the Ecological Management System were honored with a National Ecology Prize “EcoWorld”.
As of 2004, the Company has been pronounced winner at the annual contest “ECOleader”, sponsored by the Tatarstan Republic, and in 2007, OAO "Nizhnekamskneftekhim" was awarded with a certificate of the “ECOleader” contest absolute winner.
